What Is A Resume Anyway?
Wikipedia defines a Resume like this: "A Résumé...is a document containing a summary or listing of relevant job experience and education, usually for the purpose of obtaining an interview when seeking employment.”
While this is true, it isn't the complete story. A Resume also must meet to the current required standards and a Resume must fit the requirements dictated by the culture it is being used in.
A resume generally consists of the following sections:
Contact Information: Your name, phone number(s) and email address.
Objective: This is your attention grabber. Your objective should reflect what you can do for each employer you contact.
Skills and Abilities: Now it's time to sell yourself, make your skills abilities and talents clearly known to the employer don't be shy. They are looking for people with your skills.
Employment History : Be discriminating here jobs that didn't contribute to your overall skill set need not be mentioned. If you are an I.T. professional and have experience as an I.T. professional you don't have to list the fact that you waited tables 5 years ago!
Education: If your education is a selling point talk it up. If your education is mediocre or doesn't add anything keep it toward the end of the resume.
Training--Certifications--Licenses--Awards--Affiliations
Again if these are applicable, if they make you look good use them, if not, then don't worry about them.
Formatting the resume correctly is also a big part of resume writing. For example, in many federal jobs and government jobs, your Resume is run through a machine and is given a grade. If it doesn't score high enough...no human even sees it.
In the case of a civilian Resume...many are simply scanned in to a system...to begin the process. If the resume is...not correctly formatted...it will be rejected...and chances are you'll never even know about it.
Your resume must be formatted in a web-friendly digital format.
A resume is no longer simply a listing of your experience, it really has to be a selling tool. The world of computers has made the job search a totally different animal. The ease of sending an email has made the ease of applying for a job significantly greater and has generated a lot more competition.
Take your time study up on this. It could very well be the difference between a Great Job and no job at all.
